Five-star cornerback John Meredith has officially announced his commitment to the University of Texas, giving the Longhorns another massive win on the recruiting trail. The Fort Worth (TX) North Crowley standout, rated as the No. 2 overall prospect in the nation and the No. 1 cornerback in the Class of 2027 according to Rivals, chose Texas over fellow finalists Texas A&M and Alabama. At 6-foot-2 and 175 pounds, Meredith possesses the size, athleticism, and elite coverage skills that have made him one of the most sought-after defensive backs in the country.

Meredith’s commitment continues Texas’ recent dominance in recruiting and developing defensive backs. Under Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorn coaching staff, Texas has established itself as one of the premier destinations for secondary talent. Meredith now joins a program that recently produced standout defensive backs such as Jahdae Barron, Malik Muhammad, Michael Taaffe, and Andrew Mukuba, all of whom helped elevate the Longhorn defense and showcase the pathway from Austin to the NFL. For a player with professional aspirations, that track record was undoubtedly a major factor in his decision.

One coach who is likely celebrating this commitment as much as anyone is new defensive coordinator Will Muschamp. Known throughout his coaching career for developing elite defensive backs and building aggressive secondaries, Muschamp is going to absolutely love Meredith’s coverage ability. Whether lined up in press coverage, playing off-man, or roaming in zone concepts, Meredith consistently displays elite instincts, fluid movement skills, and the ball-hawking traits necessary to shut down opposing receivers. His combination of length and athleticism gives Texas a future cornerstone piece in the secondary.

Despite the current uncertainty surrounding Meredith’s final high school season after being ruled ineligible, his status as one of the nation’s premier prospects remains unchanged. Recruiting analysts and college coaches have already seen enough to know exactly what kind of talent he brings to the field. Whether he ultimately suits up in Texas or finishes his high school career elsewhere, Meredith will remain firmly entrenched among the top recruits in the country. His elite measurables, proven production, and tremendous upside ensure that his national standing isn’t going anywhere.

For Texas fans, this commitment represents another major statement from a program that continues to recruit at an elite level. Landing the nation’s No. 1 cornerback over Texas A&M and Alabama is a significant victory, and Meredith has all the tools to become the next great defensive back to wear burnt orange. With Will Muschamp guiding his development and a proven pipeline of NFL-caliber talent in the Texas secondary, the future looks incredibly bright for both Meredith and the Longhorns as they continue building one of the nation’s most talented recruiting classes. Hook ’em. 🤘
